Even those unfamiliar with herbal medicine often know Echinacea. The species most commonly used medicinally include E. purpurea and E. angustifolia. Echinacea, native to North America, has been in use for hundreds of years. The root, slightly sweet and pungent, is most commonly used. A high quality Echinacea tincture will induce a lasting tingling on the tongue. ActionsEchinacea is anti-microbial, anti-inflammatory, and immune stimulatory. It increases the number of white blood cells, improves body resistance to infection, and stimulates wound healing. Echinacea can be used safely and effectively over long periods of time. UsePreparation: 1/2– 1 tsp dried root per cup of water, steeped 20 minutes. Toxicity: No known toxicity. Contraindications: Individuals with auto-immune disease and/or AIDS should consult with their physician before using Echinacea. Ecological: E. angustifolia is becoming endangered. To protect the wild populations, use only organically cultivated E. angustifolia. |
